TRIP OF A LIFETIME—A Sponsor’s Account

By Jan Shetter

Last October, Patty Deiter, my husband Sheldon, and I traveled with Evangelism In Depth Ministries to teach at a Women's Conference in Nagpur, India. (Sheldon was to teach pastors along with Tony DeRosa, Director of EID, USA.)

Upon arrival, our visas were confiscated and we were not permitted to teach. This, however, turned out to be a perfect plan (God's plan always is) as we "mentored" three ladies who in turn taught at the conference attended by 1300 ladies—300 more than we had anticipated! One of these ladies, Wilma, has been hired by EID/India and is busy presenting seminars and doing follow up with the women who attended the conference. His work is being accomplished in His way!

After the conference, we were able to teach at Mission India's Bible Institute near Nagpur. One of the most memorable things of that particular day was that the students learned the word "WOW!” in reference to the statement that God promises to "be with us" and equip us for whatever task He gives—WOW! (See what I mean?)

On Sunday, after worship at the Mission India church, we arrived back at
our hotel where Sheetal Kample, the Boys and Girls Christian Home student we have sponsored for more than four years, was waiting for us. She presented us with lei's—have I mentioned how VERY gracious our brothers and sisters of India are?—when we met. We were thrilled to see her, of course, and so very thankful that the Nitnawares went out of their way to bring Sheetal to us! (You see, we were to leave the following day and we were scheduled to sing at a meeting that evening so it was not possible to travel to BGCHM.)

Although Sheetal was somewhat shy and reluctant to speak at first, she got over that as she ate her ice cream after dinner at the hotel. We all (the Nitnawares, Patty, Sheldon, Sheetal and I) went to a local park and enjoyed a walk together before our new friends from BGCHM had to return. We have since gotten three letters from Sheetal describing her trip to the BIG city!

We were pleased that Sheetal's translator was present so that we could understand one another. It was exciting to learn that Sheetal memorizes a Bible verse EVERY day! (One of our presents to her was a Bible in her native language, Maharashtra.) Although Sheetal is only 12, she speaks three languages. We were interested to learn about a "typical" day for the boys and girls and their routine, but it was such a thrill to see her in person and tell her that we love her.

When we began sponsoring Sheetal, we NEVER thought we'd be able to meet her. Isn't our Lord marvelous? Praise Him for this opportunity!
